We will officially be in Jamaica on THURSDAY!! (Wednesday for some). I write this post with a bit of sad news for those of you who are in sections that may be affected by the feather shortage in Jamaica. Bacchanal Jamaica released this statement last night regarding the costumes that will be short on feathers. Those of you traveling into Jamaica could try smuggling in feathers if you’d like to ensure that your costume looks amazing. Despite that, please do not let this spoil your carnival experience.
Dear members,
We are extremely sorry to advise that as a result of the sudden ban by the Ministry of Agriculture on the importation of poultry and poultry products into Jamaica, we will not be able to properly complete a number of costumes which specifically require feathers for this year’s parade. The ban is the result of an outbreak of bird flu in several states in the USA –Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Minnesota, California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington – and British Columbia in Canada.
We receive a permit every year from the Veterinary Division in order to bring in our feathers. Recently we were informed, that despite the fact that the feathers we had sourced had as usual, been fully sterilised and certified to world standards by the US Department of Agriculture, we would not be able to bring them to Jamaica. The ban was applied with immediate effect and no prior notice.
In fact there is a ban on all feathers regardless of the origin, so it has been impossible for us to make any other arrangements.
Bacchanal Jamaica craves your understanding as this is a national issue and we assure you that we will certainly refund the cost of the missing elements. This has been a very difficult, disappointing and costly situation for us all and once again we apologise to you our revellers.
We will be working to present you with the best costume possible under this circumstance and we urge you to come out and have a great time.
Sincerely yours,
Bacchanal Jamaica
